Butler-Tarkington Community Center Opens After $3M Renovation
INDIANAPOLIS — The Butler-Tarkington Community Center officially reopened its doors Monday morning after completing a comprehensive $3 million renovation project that transformed the 40-year-old facility into a modern hub for neighborhood residents.
Located at 2802 North Meridian Street, the renovated center features expanded programming spaces, a new fitness facility, updated technology labs, and improved accessibility features throughout the building. The project, which began in January 2023, was funded through a combination of city bonds, federal community development grants, and private donations.
Enhanced Community Programming
The renovation includes a new gymnasium with regulation basketball courts, a dedicated senior center area with specialized programming space, and three computer labs equipped with high-speed internet access. The facility also added a commercial-grade kitchen to support expanded meal programs and community events.
"This renovation represents our commitment to ensuring every Indianapolis neighborhood has access to quality community resources," said Maria Rodriguez, Director of Indianapolis Parks and Recreation. "The Butler-Tarkington area has been underserved for too long, and this facility will provide essential services for families throughout the near-north side."
The center will offer after-school programming for children ages 6-17, senior fitness classes, job training workshops, and community meeting spaces available for local organizations. New partnerships with the Indianapolis Public Library system will bring expanded educational programming, including adult literacy courses and computer skills training.
Neighborhood Impact
Community leaders say the renovated facility addresses long-standing needs in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood, which has experienced significant demographic changes over the past decade. The area, bounded by 38th Street to the north, 16th Street to the south, and stretching from Meridian Street east to the Monon Trail, has seen increased investment in recent years.
"We've been advocating for these improvements for over five years," said James Mitchell, president of the Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood Association. "This center will serve as an anchor for our community, providing safe spaces for our kids and programming that brings neighbors together. It's exactly what we need as our neighborhood continues to grow and change."
The renovation also includes energy-efficient lighting and heating systems, new parking areas with improved lighting for evening activities, and landscaping designed to complement nearby Crown Hill Cemetery and the historic Butler University campus area.
Grand Opening Celebration
A community celebration is planned for Saturday, featuring tours of the renovated facility, demonstrations of new programming, and activities for all ages. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes free lunch provided by local restaurants along College Avenue.
Regular programming begins Monday, with registration now open for fall classes and activities. The center operates Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
