Carmel's Arts & Design District Adds New Plaza, Retail Space in $28M Expansion

INDIANAPOLIS — The City of Carmel is completing a $28 million expansion of its Arts & Design District with the opening of a new central plaza and 42,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, and gallery space in the Proscenium development — the latest addition to a district that has become one of Indiana's most visited destination neighborhoods.

The Carmel Arts & Design District covers several blocks of the city's downtown core, anchored by the Palladium concert hall, the Center for the Performing Arts, and a collection of more than 150 galleries, boutiques, and restaurants in a walkable, roundabout-connected streetscape.

"Carmel has made a multi-decade investment in creating a place where art, culture, commerce, and community come together," said Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam. "The Proscenium expansion adds to that vision and creates new opportunities for the independent businesses that give the district its character."

The new plaza, named the Arts Green, features public sculpture installations, flexible lawn space for outdoor performances and markets, and permanent seating designed by a Indianapolis landscape architecture firm. The space is designed to host farmers markets, art fairs, and outdoor concerts throughout the warmer months.

New Tenants

Among the businesses announced for the Proscenium retail space are an extension of the Sun King Brewing taproom, a gallery representing Midwest contemporary artists, a Spanish tapas restaurant, and a high-end pet boutique. Several spaces remain available to potential tenants.
