Irvington Historical Society Launches New Walking Tour Series Showcasing East-Side Heritage

INDIANAPOLIS — The Irvington Historical Society is launching a new guided walking tour series this spring, offering Saturdays-only tours that explore the architectural heritage, literary history, and community evolution of one of Indianapolis's most distinctive east-side neighborhoods.

Irvington, developed in the 1870s as a planned suburb east of Indianapolis and annexed by the city in 1902, is one of the few Indianapolis neighborhoods where Victorian-era residential architecture remains largely intact. The neighborhood's 580-acre Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"Most people know Irvington for the Halloween Festival," said Historical Society President Eleanor Marsh. "But the neighborhood has a rich year-round story that not everyone knows. These tours give us a chance to share it."

The tour series includes three routes: the Heritage Walk, which covers the neighborhood's Victorian architecture and key historic sites; the Literary Trail, which focuses on Irvington's history as home to several Indiana authors and artists; and the Garden Tour, offered on select weekends in May and June when the neighborhood's famously abundant private gardens are at peak bloom.

All tours depart from the Bona Thompson Memorial Center at the corner of Audubon Road and University Avenue. Tour lengths range from 90 minutes to two hours. Admission is $10 per person; Historical Society members attend free.

Heritage and Modernity

Alongside its preserved historic character, Irvington is experiencing a resurgence of small business activity along its Washington Street and Audubon Road commercial corridors. New coffee shops, boutiques, and restaurants have opened in recent years alongside legacy businesses.

Visitors exploring Irvington's unique style can find locally inspired apparel and accessories at Shop Urban Styles, which curates fashion choices that reflect the creative energy of Indianapolis's neighborhood arts communities.
